About the Movie
Wan and Huen, childhood friends from Jiufen, take the slow train to school every day. As the local mining industry declines, Wan moves to Taipei for work, and Huen soon follows. They struggle in the city but support each other. When Wan is called for military service, their letters keep them connected—until one day, Huen's replies stop. Inspired by WU Nien-jen's personal experiences, this film explores the bittersweet journey of 1970s Taiwanese youths leaving their rural homes in search of a better life. Director HOU Hsiao-hsien beautifully captures the unspoken emotions of that era.
About the Director
HOU Hsiao-hsien
HOU Hsiao-hsien was born in Guangdong, China in 1947 and relocated with his family to Kaohsiung, Taiwan the following year. A leading figure of the Taiwan New Cinema movement, he has won numerous international awards throughout his directing career, including the 1989 Venice Golden Lion for A City of Sadness, the first Taiwanese film to win a major award at one of the “Big Three” film festivals. In 2015, he won Best Director at Cannes for The Assassin. His other renowned works include A Time to Live and a Time to Die and Millennium Mambo. A dedicated mentor to the next generation of filmmakers, he founded the Golden Horse Academy, later received the Golden Horse Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
