In "OLD FOX," the story follows 11-year-old Liao Jie (played by Run-Yin Bai) and his father Liao Tai-Lai (played by Kuan-Ting Liu) as they live a simple, honest life. The frugal father and son are determined to save money to buy a home, but they face ongoing setbacks due to their poverty. Everything changes when Liao Jie meets the landlord, Mr. Xie, known as the Old Fox (played by Akio Chen), and learns the societal rules that his father never taught him. Liao Jie’s inner conflict deepens as he grapples with his father’s principles of empathy versus the Old Fox’s harsh survival tactics. The music, cinematography, and strong acting portray a stirring depiction of 1980’s Taiwan, “Old Fox” explores socioeconomic inequality through the lens of a child, along with the central theme of the film: "What kind of person do you want to become?"

《老狐狸》故事描述11歲男孩廖界(白潤音飾)與父親廖泰來(劉冠廷飾)過著樸實簡約的老實生活。節儉的父子倆一心存錢買房,卻因貧窮現實接連受挫。直到廖界遇見人稱老狐狸的房東謝老闆(陳慕義飾),並從他身上學到父親沒教他的社會法則。廖界的內心也開始搖擺於父親推己及 人的待人之道及老狐狸不平等的生存法則。音樂、攝影和出色的演技共同描繪了1980年代台灣的動人景象。《老狐狸》通過一個孩子的視角探索社會經濟不平等,並圍繞電影的核心主題:「你想成為什麼樣的人?」

About the Director

Ya-Chuan Hsiao, born in 1967 in Changhua, Taiwan, graduated from National Taipei University of the Arts. His filmmaking talent emerged early, earning multiple Golden Harvest Awards for his short films during school. In 1998, he began his cinematic career as an assistant director for Hsiao-Hsien Hou’s "Flowers of Shanghai."

Hsiao's debut feature, "Mirror Image" (2000), won "Best Film" and "Best New Director" at the Taipei Film Festival and gained international acclaim. His 2010 film, "Taipei Exchange," was nominated for “Best Original Film Song” at the Golden Horse Awards. In 2018, "Father to Son" received the “Best Director” award at the Taipei Film Festival and was featured in the Rotterdam International Film Festival's Big Screen Competition. His latest film, "Old Fox" (2023), won four major awards at the Taipei Film Festival and earned him the “Best Director” award at the 60th Golden Horse Awards.

Hsiao is renowned for his delicate emotional portrayals and captivating storytelling, skillfully integrating complex emotions and social issues into his films. His works often explore themes of fate, identity, family, and human nature, using refined visual language and evocative music to resonate with audiences.

蕭雅全出生於1967年彰化,畢業於國立臺北藝術大學美術系,學生時期便投入影像藝術創作。自1988年起,他拍攝了多部短片,屢獲金穗獎肯定,包括最佳實驗錄影帶和優等短片等大獎。1998年,他擔任侯孝賢導演的《海上花》副導演,正式踏入電影界。

2000年,蕭雅全執導首部劇情長片《命帶追逐》,該片榮獲台北電影節「最佳影片」和「最佳新導演獎」,並在國際電影節上獲得廣泛好評。2010年,他完成《第36個故事》,並入圍第47屆金馬獎「最佳電影原創歌曲」。2018年,《范保德》獲選為鹿特丹國際電影節正式競賽片,並贏得第20屆台北電影節「最佳導演獎」。2023年,他的最新作品《老狐狸》在台北電影節橫掃四項大獎,同時榮獲第60屆金馬獎「最佳導演獎」。
